Prepaid legal insurance and business consultants may not represent a good value in many cases. These plans are offered by several different providers and marketed through various channels. The theory behind the plans is that legal services are a commodity which are cheaper when purchased in bulk. For a yearly fee which can be as low as $100, subscribers are supposedly covered for any number of legal needs.

However, the truth is that many of the cheaper plans only cover a few phone consultations with a lawyer and basic services like preparing a simple will. Outside of that, the plans provide discounts on other legal services but the resulting fees usually don't amount to much of a cost savings. This depends on the service, though, because the more expensive ones typically do cover the costs of expensive services like bankruptcy, divorce or DUI defense.
